Luongo Recapture

When Roberto Luongo retired, it triggered a Cap Recapture Penalty as outlined in CBA Section 50.5 (Page 266).

The Recapture is calculated by comparing the Total amount paid vs the total Cap Hit over the course of the contract until the retirement.  In Luongo's case, he's been paid $60,382,000 and his cap hit has been $47,999,997 ($5,333,333 * 9 years).  That difference of $12,382,003 is the recapture penalty that needs to be charged to teams.

Vancouver

Luongo played all of the 2010-2011 to 2012-2013 seasons with Vancouver, so the Recapture Benefit (Total Paid less Total Cap Hit) during that period is 100% allocated to Vancouver ($7,430,001).

For the 2013-2014 season, his total recapture benefit (Total Paid less Cap Hit) is $1,380,667. He was traded on March 4, 2014 to Florida, with 15% of his contract retained by Vancouver.

Therefore, Vancouver's portion for the 2013-2014 season is 100% of the recapture benefit for 154 of 195 season days ($1,380,667 * 100% * 154/195 =$1,090,373) plus 15% of the recapture benefit for the remaining 41 days of the season he was with Florida ($1,380,667 * 15% * 41/195 =$43,544). The total recapture benefit incurred by Vancouver in 2013-2014 is $1,133,917.

The recapture benefit from 2014-2015 through 2018-2019 is $3,571,335. Since Vancouver retained 15% in the trade, their portion is $3,571,335 * 15% = $535,700.

Vancouver's total recapture benefit over the contract is $9,099,618 (the total of the amounts above).  Since he has 3 years remaining on his contract, that total is divided by 3.  Therefore, Vancouver's Cap Charge over the next 3 years is $3,033,206 per year

Florida

For the 2013-2014 season, his total recapture benefit (Total Paid less Cap Hit) is $1,380,667. He was traded on March 4, 2014 to Florida, with 15% of his contract retained by Vancouver.

Therefore, Florida's portion for the 2013-2014 season is 85% of the recapture benefit for the remaining 41 days of the season he was with Florida ($1,380,667 * 85% * 41/195 =$246,750).

The recapture benefit from 2014-2015 through 2018-2019 is $3,571,335. Since Vancouver retained 15% in the trade, Florida's portion is $3,571,335 * 85% = $3,035,635.

Florida's total recapture benefit over the contract is $3,282,385 (the total of the amounts above).  Since he has 3 years remaining on his contract, that total is divided by 3.  Therefore, Florida's Cap Charge over the next 3 years is $1,094,128 per year
