Salary Retention & LTIR
If a player is put on LTIR and is part of a retained salary transaction, do both teams get cap relief or just the team he's currently playing for? For instance, the Senators retained 25% of Matt Murray's contract in the trade to the Maple Leafs, and he's now on LTIR in Toronto. Do the Senators get cap relief too or just Toronto?
Answer
Nov 14, 2022Only the team the player currently belongs to receives the benefit of him being on LTIR. So, only the Leafs receive a benefit, and it’s based on Murray’s $4,687,500 cap hit for the Leafs.
