Cap Hit on Buyout after Retained Salary Trade
What is the resulting cap hit on retained salary teams/player's current team when a buyout occurs? Does the buyout nullify the retention or is it unaffected?
AnswerAug 20, 2021
When a player is bought out who was previously retained, the buyout cap hit is allocated by the same % as the retained transaction. The team that originally retained salary has that cap hit replaced by their portion of the buyout cap hit. Dion Phaneuf is a good example as Ottawa retained 25% when he was traded to LA. When LA subsequently bought him out, the retained cap hit for Ottawa was replaced by 25% of the buyout cap hit. https://puckpedia.com/player/dion-phaneuf/buyout?s=2019-2020
